Mission and Purpose

Picture

The mission of The Second Hand Parrot Sanctuary, Inc. is to provide a permanent safe haven and permanent life care for parrots in need, to provide education to individuals and the public with regard to the need to provide appropriate care for caged parrots, and to educate the public with regard to the importance of preserving wild parrots and their habitat.

Our beginnings

Picture
In 2009, I was employed in the human services arena, and made a promise to a dying client: that I would take care of her two Amazon parrots for the rest of their lives.  I already had several cockatiels and a lovebird - how could two more birds possibly make a difference?  But, a difference they did make, with Rhio having significant behavior problems and Divine perseveratively calling.  When the opportunity presented itself for me to obtain a Congo African Grey Parrot, a Blue & Gold Macaw Parrot, and a Timneh African Grey Parrot from people who could no longer care for their pets the way they need to be cared for, I realized that taking care of exotic birds was something I enjoyed, something that was needed, and something that could benefit many.  And thus, The Second Hand Parrot Sanctuary was born.

Vision

It is our belief that birds need space, interaction, enrichment, attention, and the company of other parrots.  The vision of The Second Hand Parrot Sanctuary is to provide a safe haven for parrots of all species and to provide the needed space, interaction, enrichment, attention, and the company of other parrots that will allow healthy longevity.
